PhD Student

Tummala's research activity is mainly focused on the  Ambient Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition (AP-CVD) synthesis of 2-dimensional nanosheets of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs), in particular, MoS2, MoTe2, PtTe2(WS2, WTe2) on a large scale and their characterization mainly by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, Photoluminescence(PL). Further research activities are addressed to the integration of such TMDs on different substrates (SiO2, Sapphire, Patterned...) and on the development of heterostructures for potential applications and devices in nanoelectronics, optoelectronics, energy storage, etc. This research activity is done under the 2D-Materials Research Group (P.I. Dr. Alessandro Molle) at the CNR-IMM Unit of Agrate Brianza. 



(i) Developing processes for the novel 2-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides including MoS2, WS2, MoTe2, PtTe2, NiTe2, and mono elemental materials like tellurene, bismuthene using  Chemical vapor deposition (CVD). 

(ii) Characterization techniques: Raman Spectroscopy, SEM, PL, 

(iii) Optical and electrical characterization: Internal Photoemission Spectroscopy of electrons(IPE), Photoconductivity measurements

Biography: Tummala Pinakapani obtained a Masters in Material Science and Nanotechnology from Politecnico di Milano, Italy in 2019 where he carried out his master thesis on "Large Area Growth of monolayer MoS2 nanosheets using Chemical Vapor Deposition" under the supervision of  Dr. Alessio Lamperti(CNR-IMM) and Prof. Luca Giampaolo Nobili, in CNR-IMM Unit of Agrate Brianza. After he joined the Italian National Research Council laboratories in September 2019 as a Post-Graduate Fellow involved in the development of novel two-dimensional materials under European project grant. In 2020, Tummala started his Doctoral Research fellow position in 2D-Materials Group at CNR-IMM unit with collaboration in a joint International Ph.D. program in Science at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Italy) and KU Leuven(Belgium). He then moved to KU Leuven in July 2022 - Febraury 2023 for his doctoral studies in the Department of Physics and Astronomy to work in the field of Internal Photoemission spectroscopy (IPE) under Prof. Valeri Afanasiev, head of Semiconductor Physics Department, KU Leuven. His research activity focuses on the synthesis and electrical characterization of different transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs).
